Preserve / Wrap / Layer
The proposed extension to Gunnar Asplund’s iconic library preserves three buildings on the project site representative of Swedish “Modern Classicism”. These buildings are wrapped in a glass envelope, establishing a reading of the extension as a layered contemporary entity that speaks to Asplund’s library in a language of contextual deference and distinctive material presence. Such layering reminds us of the passing of time while demonstrating that juxtaposition can result in exceptional richness.
Envelope
The envelope is composed of a delicate filigree of transparent and reflective bands within individual glass lites. This reveals the pre-existing buildings and library life behind the glass while generating an optically complex and ever changing temporal urban experience. As a hybrid of unusual phenomenological complexity, it accentuates our “real time” engagement with the built environment.
Piazza / Campanile
The principal entrance to the extension is set back 40 metres from the street (Odengatan). This protects the figural profile of Asplund’s library, while exploiting its walls in the service of generating a new and important piazza. Like the campanile in medieval Italian piazze, a modest tower, equal in height to Asplund’s drum, marks the new piazza and the entrance to the Library. In so doing, it establishes a conversation with the drum of Asplund’s masterpiece and becomes a landmark in its own right.
Collective assembly
Both interior and exterior public spaces of quality are activated by the marriage of significant form and the programmatic distribution of spaces that create the circumstances for collective assembly. Such spaces reflect our innate desire to gather in the world with others.
The interior of the building proposes horizontal and vertical programmatic spatial adjacencies in which people can watch and interact with each other. Upon entering the library one is met by the activity of people reading, researching and people watching in the news zone. Three open levels of dedicated computer study areas and a restaurant also give onto the same space.
The preserved buildings are deployed as open book depositories, so that their tectonic integrity may be preserved. One of the great advantages of this approach is to create two impressive reading rooms framed by the three pre-existing buildings, where citizens/readers can read in community.

Préservation / Emballage / Stratification
L’agrandissement proposé à la bibliothèque emblématique réalisée par Gunnar Asplund préserve trois bâtiments sur le site du projet, représentatifs du « Classicisme Moderne » suédois. Ces bâtiments sont emballés dans une enveloppe de verre, ce qui amène une lecture de l’agrandissement en tant qu’entité contemporaine stratifiée, qui s’adresse à la bibliothèque d’Asplund dans un langage de déférence contextuelle et avec une présence matérielle distinctive. Une telle stratification évoque le passage du temps tout en démontrant que la juxtaposition peut mener à une richesse exceptionnelle.
Enveloppe
L’enveloppe est constituée d’un délicat filigrane de bandes transparentes et réfléchissantes à même des panneaux de verre individuels. Ceci révèle les bâtiments déjà en place et les activités dans la bibliothèque derrière le verre, tout en créant une expérience urbaine et temporelle complexe au point de vue optique et sans cesse changeante. En tant qu’hybride d’une complexité phénoménologique inhabituelle, elle accentue notre engagement en « temps réel » envers l’environnement bâti.
Piazza / Campanile
L’accès principal à l’agrandissement est placé en retrait de 40 mètres par rapport à la rue (Odengatan). Cela protège la nature d’objet de la bibliothèque d’Asplund tout en mettant ses murs à contribution pour envelopper une nouvelle et importante piazza.
À la manière des campaniles dans les piazzas italiennes médiévales, une tour modeste, de même hauteur que le cylindre d’Asplund, signale la nouvelle piazza et l’entrée de la bibliothèque. Ce faisant, elle engage une conversation avec le cylindre du chef-d’œuvre d’Asplund et devient elle même un repère.
Rassemblement collectif
Des espaces publics de qualité, tant intérieurs qu’extérieurs, sont engendrés par la rencontre de formes significatives et de la distribution programmatique des espaces, qui occasionne des circonstances propices aux rassemblements collectifs. De tels espaces reflètent notre désir inné de se réunir avec les autres en société.
L’intérieur du bâtiment propose des contiguïtés spatiales au niveau du programme, tant à l’horizontale qu’à la verticale, grâce auxquelles les gens peuvent se regarder et interagir les uns avec les autres. En entrant dans la bibliothèque, nous sommes confrontés à l’activité des gens qui lisent, font des recherches, et s’observent les uns les autres dans la section des périodiques. Trois niveaux ouverts d’espaces consacrés à l’utilisation d’ordinateurs et un restaurant donnent aussi sur ce même espace.
Les bâtiments conservés sont mis à profit en tant que dépôts à aire ouverte pour les livres, de façon à ce que leur intégrité tectonique puisse être préservée. L’un des plus grands avantages de cette approche est qu’elle permet de créer deux impressionnantes salles de lecture encadrées par les trois bâtiments déjà en place, où les citoyens/lecteurs peuvent lire en communauté.
